alekfelstiner on "Custom email instructions don't match Google Apps"

I have tried a few times to set up a custom email with a domain I mapped to WordPress.
These are the instructions I'm trying to follow, but they don't actually match the current Google Apps verification interface:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

The instructions say: "When Google asks you to verify domain ownership, you can choose either to use a CNAME record or an HTML method. You’ll be provided with a code."

You actually don't get to make this choice at this point. First it asks whether you want to add a DNS record, add a meta tag, or upload an HTML file. If you try to add a DNS record, it gives you a TXT string, not a "code." And the TXT string cannot be entered into the "verification code" field on WordPress Domains. Instead, I get an error window saying "Your Google validation string should look like this: googleffffff12345."

Please advise. Where do I actually get the verification code to enter in WordPress domains? Or how do I do the meta tag or HTML upload?
